Several people are feared dead after a fatal accident at Kikopey in Gilgil, along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.The accident involved a collision of a 14-seater matatu with a trailer, reportedly after the truck suffered brake failure.
According to the Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru, authorities are still assessing the full extent of the tragedy.
“We are yet to confirm the exact number of casualties and fatalities, if there be. But we can confirm that we have received the report and dispatched teams and emergency units to respond to the incident,” he said.
Motorists have been urged to proceed with caution along the highway as the accident continues to cause heavy traffic congestion. Emergency responders and traffic police remain at the scene, controlling the flow of vehicles and assisting those affected.
The situation has been further complicated by a large number of local residents who have gathered at the scene, with some helping rescue teams while others add to the congestion.
Rescue efforts are still underway, as teams work to free passengers trapped in the wreckage and evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
